Boys Don't Cry (1999)

This movie came out a while back but I decided to finally watch it after seeing it featured in This Film is Not Yet Rated, the documentary about the secretive folks at the MPAA. Even though it's not very graphic at all, many viewers were predictably squeamish about the whole transgender thing. But even without the main character's sexual identity crisis driving the story, this would've been an interesting film because the portrayal of these characters (based on real people) is so dead-on. Swank and Sevigny are great but Peter Sarsgaard, Brendan Sexton and a few others play characters that I feel like I actually met while visiting small towns in Nebraska (or small towns anywhere, really). Much like Little Fish with Cate Blanchett, the achievement here lies with the characters, and not just with a sexy story about drugs and murder.

I liked this one a lot, but it has been quite some time since I have seen it. This was Swank's real breakout performance I believe.

The story is certainly not for everyone, but I thought it was brilliantly done.
