As I write this, Million Dollar Baby sits right in the middle of the IMDB Top 250 list, and I think deservedly so. Really the only thing I didn't like about it was the voice-over. I've got nothing against its use in general, it's just that Morgan Freeman doing it is getting a little old. But he and Clint Eastwood are great in this film and it's pretty entertaining to see montages of bad-ass Hillary Swank knocking people out. The members of her hillbilly family are played with scary realism. This engaging but not overly sentimental film's screenplay was written by Paul Haggis, for whom I am quickly gaining a lot of respect after barely being able to sit through Crash.

I liked this movie as well.
I thought the ending was handled dreadfully, but other than that was relatively pleased with the movie (if not blown to smithereens). The ending, to me, felt like an artful sucker punch. It didn't really add anything to the movie aside from some conjured-up pathos, even if it was effectively super-depressing. I just don't like it when a movie sets me up and then kicks me in the face for no reason other than to just see me doubled over. This ending was like the exact opposite of the conclusion of "Das Boot," which kicks you very hard in the face but has a reason for it.

I think that's the last mention of Das Boot I can handle before I break down and watch it. I borrowed the VHS set of two tapes from the library a while back but never got farther than the first few minutes due to various distractions. I am writing this anecdote about how I didn't watch a certain movie as if anyone cares. Web 2.0 is rotting my brain.
