Ju-on: The Grudge (2003)

I haven't seen the Sarah Michelle Gellar version, and I don't see any reason to, or to see any of the sequels for that matter. But, I have tremendous respect for this film because it scared the crap out of me. It's a very standard set up: a haunted house inhabited by ghosts/demons that torture and kill everyone. The director keeps our attention by segmenting the movie into intertwining vignettes with many characters who all end up in the house for different reasons. The amazing thing to me is that this movie, which is so much scarier than the typical American effort with a huge effects budget, was made with hardly anything more than makeup and clever camera work.
