This one recently made it onto a Babble.com list of the 26 Most Disturbing Family Films Ever. There is a brief explanation of why each film is on the list but for Watership Down the author just writes "I don't want to talk about this any further." So naturally I had to see what that was all about. Its rating is PG (I can't think of another animated film about furry animals that's not rated G) and besides being animated there's nothing in it that would suggest it was ever meant to be a family film. It's incredibly bloody and violent and it has more scenes than I can count of various animals mauling each other to death. Anybody can tell that it is highly allegorical, but I am probably too ignorant of the historical and classical themes involved to fully appreciate that angle. I liked the style and the epic feel of the film but I got a little tired of all the running and hiding and killing. Still, there is something appealing about this trippy rabbit movie that I can't quite put my finger on, which makes me want to check out Richard Adams's original novel.
