The Orphanage (2007)

Despite a few plot holes or at least questionable elements this was a very clever film, and one that made me shiver more than a few times. Sitting alone in a mostly empty, air-conditioned theater may have had something to do with it, but there were moments for me that were downright traumatic. Produced by Guillermo del Toro, its style is very similar to his own excellent orphanage story, The Devil's Backbone, but the director includes several decidedly un-del Toro (and perhaps unnecessary) scenes where a "medium" and a group of poltergeist experts try to substantiate claims of supernatural activity. Despite all of that we are left in the end to wonder how much of the damage might have been caused by only a child's imagination, although at one time there were definitely some very evil things happening in that house.
