The Plague Dogs (1982)

My wife made a crack about how this is Thelma & Louise for dogs. I laughed, but then I realized that she was absolutely right. Except that's backwards, as this adaptation of Richard Adams's novel appeared almost a decade earlier. In The Plague Dogs, Snitter and Rowf, who are best friends, manage to escape from a research laboratory and proceed to get into a lot of trouble, not all of it their fault. They manage to upset a lot of sheep herders and local authorities, and cause the lab scientists to suspect that they are infected with bubonic plague, so naturally their days are numbered. As in Thelma, the real villains are men who mistreat them and force them to act desperately. Featured voice actors include John Hurt and Patrick Stewart. I'll leave it to you to figure out what the canine version of driving off a cliff would be.
